ABOUT FORMULA 3

FIA Formula 3 is the third tier of Formula racing and sits on the ladder to the pinnacle of motorsport, Formula 1. DAMS Lucas Oil joins the series in 2025, its first season in the championship since 2017, when it ran under the GP3 Series banner.

In 2019, FIA Formula 3 was newly launched to combine GP3 Series and European F3, helping to form an official third rung on the Road to F1 ladder.

Each event on the 10-round calendar supports the Formula 1 weekend, with a 40-minute Sprint Race on the Saturday and a 45-minute Feature Race on the Sunday.

As a spec series, every car uses the same Dallara chassis, Mecachrome engine and Pirelli tyres. It’s therefore up to the individual teams to set the car up and execute a good race strategy, and for the young drivers to show their talent.

Race Format

Drivers have one Free Practice session lasting 45-minutes on a Friday morning, before a 30-minute Qualifying in the afternoon, with the quickest driver being awarded two points for pole position.

On the Saturday, drivers compete in a 40-minute Sprint Race, with the grid for this event set by reversing the top 12 from qualifying. The top 10 finishers score points.

Sunday’s Feature Race grid is decided by the order from qualifying and lasts 45 minutes with no mandatory pit stop. The top 10 score points again, this time in the Formula 1 style scoring system, with an additional point available for achieving the fastest lap in each race.
